Bronze Curtain Wall

The Bronze Curtain Wall is 12m wide and 3.5m tall, and is installed in the office lobby of The Zig Zag Building on Victoria Street, SW1. It was designed using advanced 3D CAD software, which enabled us to resolve the complex geometry, and to test, via films, how it would be perceived as you move through the lobby. The wall was designed like a bronze cast of a curtain, was fabricated by the FSE foundry in Essex, and each panel was hand crafted to achieve varying degrees of patina. It is in effect a very large 'luminaire' or lamp shade, shrouding and carefully distributing light. At one point, the inner layer of white plastic in revealed, creating a back-lit screen for signage. The Bronze Wall is a microcosm of the south facade of The Zig Zag Building, a complex, layered “curtain wall”, echoing, abstracting and densifying its rhythms and proportions.
