20 Jun 2025

Westminster Coroner's Court has won the International Award 2025 from The Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland. Our project for Shackelwell Lane in Dalston was also Commended. Presenting the awards, RIAI President Sean Mahon FRIAI said: “A massive congratulations to all the Architects recognised this year. These Awards celebrate not only individual excellence but also the profound positive impact Architecture has on our communities, economy, and cultural identity. The common theme in these Awards is the value that Architecture brings to people and places, at every scale in our villages, towns and cities – from our homes, to our workplaces, to our community buildings and spaces and to our public infrastructure. It is about Architecture that goes beyond aesthetics to create places and spaces that support communities, and enhance how we live, work, and connect every day.” With regards to the court, the Jury Citation noted: "The judges commended the Architects’ reverent response to the brief in creating spaces for the bereaved in the subtle extension of this Grade II-listed Victorian redbrick Westminster Coroner’s Court in London. The combination of scales and the definition of new against old was welcomed by the judges. The simple barrel-vaulted form of the new extension quietly echoes the top-lit glass volume of the original Victorian court. The calm, thoughtful use of natural materials – including limestone and wood – is accentuated with painted and etched glass artworks. All combine to create an exemplar of how architecture can create a tangible tone of beauty and reflection appropriate to the brief."
